TB NETBible YUN-IBR Ref. Silang Nama Gambar Himne

Yesaya 23:9

Konteks

23:9 The Lord who commands armies planned it –

to dishonor the pride that comes from all her beauty, 1

to humiliate all the dignitaries of the earth.

Yesaya 24:6

Konteks

24:6 So a treaty curse 2  devours the earth;

its inhabitants pay for their guilt. 3

This is why the inhabitants of the earth disappear, 4

and are reduced to just a handful of people. 5

Yesaya 25:2

Konteks

25:2 Indeed, 6  you have made the city 7  into a heap of rubble,

the fortified town into a heap of ruins;

the fortress of foreigners 8  is no longer a city,

it will never be rebuilt.

Yesaya 32:2

Konteks

32:2 Each of them 9  will be like a shelter from the wind

and a refuge from a rainstorm;

like streams of water in a dry region

and like the shade of a large cliff in a parched land.

Yesaya 41:4

Konteks

41:4 Who acts and carries out decrees? 10

Who 11  summons the successive generations from the beginning?

I, the Lord, am present at the very beginning,

and at the very end – I am the one. 12

Yesaya 46:11

Konteks

46:11 who summons an eagle 13  from the east,

from a distant land, one who carries out my plan.

Yes, I have decreed, 14

yes, I will bring it to pass;

I have formulated a plan,

yes, I will carry it out.

Yesaya 56:2

Konteks

56:2 The people who do this will be blessed, 15

the people who commit themselves to obedience, 16

who observe the Sabbath and do not defile it,

who refrain from doing anything that is wrong. 17

Yesaya 57:16

Konteks

57:16 For I will not be hostile 18  forever

or perpetually angry,

for then man’s spirit would grow faint before me, 19

the life-giving breath I created.

[23:9]  1 tn Heb “the pride of all the beauty.”

[24:6]  2 sn Ancient Near Eastern treaties often had “curses,” or threatened judgments, attached to them. (See Deut 28 for a biblical example of such curses.) The party or parties taking an oath of allegiance acknowledged that disobedience would activate these curses, which typically threatened loss of agricultural fertility as depicted in the following verses.

[24:6]  3 tn The verb אָשַׁם (’asham, “be guilty”) is here used metonymically to mean “pay, suffer for one’s guilt” (see HALOT 95 s.v. אשׁם).

[24:6]  4 tn BDB 359 s.v. חָרַר derives the verb חָרוּ (kharu) from חָרַר (kharar, “burn”), but HALOT 351 s.v. II חרה understands a hapax legomenon חָרָה (kharah, “to diminish in number,” a homonym of חָרָה) here, relating it to an alleged Arabic cognate meaning “to decrease.” The Qumran scroll 1QIsaa has חורו, perhaps understanding the root as חָוַר (khavar, “grow pale”; see Isa 29:22 and HALOT 299 s.v. I חור).

[24:6]  5 tn Heb “and mankind is left small [in number].”

[25:2]  6 tn Or “For” (KJV, NAB, NASB, NRSV).

[25:2]  7 tn The Hebrew text has “you have made from the city.” The prefixed mem (מ) on עִיר (’ir, “city”) was probably originally an enclitic mem suffixed to the preceding verb. See J. N. Oswalt, Isaiah (NICOT), 1:456, n. 3.

[25:2]  8 tc Some with support from the LXX emend זָרִים (zarim, “foreigners”) to זֵדִים (zedim, “the insolent”).

[32:2]  9 tn Heb “a man,” but אִישׁ (’ish) probably refers here to “each” of the officials mentioned in the previous verse.

[41:4]  10 tn Heb “Who acts and accomplishes?”; NASB “Who has performed and accomplished it.”

[41:4]  11 tn The interrogative particle is understood by ellipsis (note the preceding line).

[41:4]  12 tn Heb “I, the Lord, [am with] the first, and with the last ones I [am] he.”

[46:11]  13 tn Or, more generally, “a bird of prey” (so NAB, NASB, NIV, NRSV; see 18:6).

[46:11]  14 tn Heb “spoken”; KJV “I have spoken it.”

[56:2]  15 tn Heb “blessed is the man who does this.”

[56:2]  16 tn Heb “the son of mankind who takes hold of it.”

[56:2]  17 tn Heb and who keeps his hand from doing any evil.”

[57:16]  18 tn Or perhaps, “argue,” or “accuse” (so NAB, NIV, NRSV).

[57:16]  19 tn Heb “for a spirit from before me would be faint.”
